Story Ideas from the 7 Basic Plots
By Deb Gallardo
From Suite101.com, my new favorite writing site, comes this article on the seven basic plots. All stories fit into one of the seven, so says British author and journalist Christopher Booker. The article about Booker’s 700-page tome was written by Suite 101.com contributor Adair Jones.Whether they represent the deep psychological structures of human experience or whether they are merely constructs of tradition, no matter what the story, you’ll find one or more of these basic plotlines:
- Overcoming the Monster
- Rags to Riches
- The Quest
- Voyage and Return
- Comedy
- Tragedy
- Rebirth
So as you are brainstorming story ideas, consider which of these plotlines your story might fit. Read The Seven Basic Plots for descriptions of each. (opens in new window)
