Story Ideas - - Giving Uncle Sam His Fair Share

It’s tax day in the US for those of us who filed extensions before the April 15 deadline. Well, it WAS tax day a little over an hour ago. And true to form, I squeaked through at the last second with my return getting efiled a few minutes late, but filed nonetheless.
There are some things I truly dislike about myself and procrastination is one of them. Be that as it may, this was the first time I used an online-based tax software. Last year it would have been out of the question, as I was on dial-up until early December. The guys in the white coats would have had me in a straight jacket by the time the first page loaded…6 hours later.
Okay, so I’m exaggerating. But not by much.
The online tax return process was painless, no different really than using their downloaded files or the CD version. Very cool.
It’s time to celebrate now. In this case, I’m ready for a solid night’s sleep. Three days obsessing about deductions and digging through papers is enough. Tonight I rest!
I know I promised to stay focused on story ideas. And so I shall. But not today. Except to say this:
What if you wrote about a character who procrastinated at everything, including filing taxes on time? What, if any, are the consequences? Is there something that will “teach her/him a lesson” that will prevent future procrastinations? Is it a lifelong problem (as it is in my case)? Is is curable? Is it annoying to others, and if so, why? What other ways can procrastination impact work, relationships, opportunities lost?
There, I just gave you a mini present — enough questions to ask yourself (and remember, your brain doesn’t stop searching for an answer once it’s been asked) to keep you busy at least a few hours. Ah, the power of the human brain…
