Story Ideas - Overcoming Inertia

By Deb Gallardo

Getting started. It’s often the biggest hurdle that writers face. Whether it’s a blank page or a blank mind, or writer’s block — whatever the reason, overcoming inertia takes tremendous effort, just as in the physical realm. From one of my favorite writing blogs, here’s one writer’s take on how to get started. I’ve focused on her tips on story ideas, but be sure to read the entire article on her site, as it is EXCELLENT advice for any writer.

You can generate story ideas from newspaper articles; observations; retelling a familiar story or what if scenarios. Here are a few suggestions:

Fictionalize true crime stories and recount events as if you were the victim / perpetrator / investigator.

Observe strangers and imagine their life story.  If they’re deep in conversation, what are they talking about?  What is their relationship to each other? How did they arrive at this particular place at this time?
