Story Ideas from the Newspaper
By Deb Gallardo
Short story author and playwright, Sylvia Reed, is in playwright heaven since “The Ones That Flutter” was chosen as one of nine finalists in New York City’s Summer Play Festival this year. Finalists have their plays produced on a New York stage, so just getting to this point is, in itself, a tremendous opportunity for exposure and experience. “The Ones That Flutter,” which opened at The Public Theater in July, is about a warden on death row who is haunted by his past and struggling to make peace with himself.
In an article from the Bradenton Herald, excerpts from an interview with the Florida resident mention this tidbit about where she got the story idea for her latest project. “Kingfisher” was inspired by something she saw in the newspaper about a woman obsessed by a whale. A former journalist, Reed frequently finds story inspiration in the newspaper.
