Creative Writing Ideas And Prompts to Defeat The Evil Blank Page!

Creative Writing Ideas and Prompts

Writers write! That’s what they say. But even experienced (and published) writers will find themselves intimidated by the evil blank page, so here are a few prompts for spawning creative writing ideas.

1. A moment in time : pick any moment of time from the era you want to write about and place yourself in the setting. Now, describe what you would be seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, thinking. This method works best if you intend your story to take place in our world and at some point in history. Even if it is just one day ago, so that you can use true events and experiences to enhance the image and help kickstart the creative process.

2. Real fiction : take a factual event from your life or history and turn it into a single sentence plot line. Now add your characters to the plot and build your story.

3. Life again : pick any moment or event from your life or history that you want and think of how you or the world would be different if it were changed. What if the weather had prevented the D-Day invasion from ever taking place? What if President Reagan hadn’t survived being shot in 1981? What if Russia hadn’t backed down during the Cuban Missile Crisis?

4. Where’s Waldo? : pick any person from your past whom you’ve lost touch with, possibly someone you knew in grade school, and imagine what they might be doing today… or in ten years from now. Are they in politics? Maybe they’re a spy, or running a business? How about trading their body for drugs? How did they get to that place in life?

These 4 simple creative writing prompts can help anyone stuck for writing ideas.
