Writing Prompts
Sometimes, when the 4 methods I mentioned yesterday don’t seem to be inspiring me enough I believe it may be because I’m thinking too much… or trying too hard. In these instances I’ll use more simple writing prompts to get the creativity flowing.
For me, a writing prompt is a simple, low pressure and little thought required aid, usually in the form of a question I pose to myself, and often born from viewing an existing story at a strange perspective.
For example, a classic one would be “what if you awoke in a strange land, and found to survive you had to become a serial killer there?” — That could make for a horrific thriller, though it’s also the plot from The Wizard of Oz.
Another prompt I like to use is to imagine people I’m very close to in my life as themselves in some very strange place or circumstance. This one typically requires more work to develop the actual plot and story from, but quite often leads to the most developed characters I’ve ever written.
