Memorial Day Remembrances
By Deb Gallardo
I’m a veteran and proud to call myself so. I served in the Army for just shy of three years, mostly at Fort Knox, Kentucky. My job was serving as part of a team that ran a dinner theatre where we produced 10 shows a year for military members and their families. Not exactly the stuff from which heroes are made.
But we knew our role was to maintain and/or boost morale. Morale, welfare and recreation is an important part of the overall military strategy of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in peace time and in war time.
Having lived overseas as a military wife, I can tell you that living away from home, no matter how exotic or familiar the setting, can be lonely in the extreme. Mail, in these cases, is crucial. There’s nothing worse than being far from home and feeling cut off from everyone you care about. If you’re in harm’s way, that communication is even more essential — a lifeline, if you will.
If you know someone overseas, whether or not in a combat zone, write a letter and an email today. Right now. Snail mail, in particular, is a treasure.
And watch the following video. It’s been a long time since I have been this moved. Get the hankies out. This one will touch your heart and make you grateful. Then take another moment to email a friend with the link to this post. Here’s the raw link to copy: http://www.debgallardo.com/virtuoso/281/memorial-day-remembrances/
