Here is a way to get your students to think creatively. It’s called “Zoom.”
Zoom
The idea is to have your students think of a memory in their lives.
Have them think about the experience as a moment frozen in time. Once they’ve chosen a memory, they write a brief paragraph about it. The exercise was designed for people who have emigrated to the US, so the title they suggest is “The First Day in America,” but this could just as easily be “My First Day in Canada” or “Our First Day in India” or “The Day I Saw the Queen of England.”
Next they zoom in on all the sensory elements of that moment, describing in vivid detail what each of their five senses experienced. For example, “As I stepped off the plane the cold wind pinched my cheeks…”
The main thing for them to relive that moment, exciting or disappointing, profound or boring or unreal. Whatever kind of moment it was for them, this exercise is designed to stimulate the memory and to recall the sensory elements that will draw their readers into the experience.
