1. Story ideas from weird and off-beat news (opens in new window)
For truly off-beat and truth-is-stranger-than-fiction news tidbits, this site will tickle your funny bone and have you asking, “What were they thinking?” One or more news items may inspire a story.
Examples from the week of May 25th’s archives:
- On plants in Switzerland , which have “legal rights.” …The committee [on Non-Human Gene Technology] would permit genetic engineering of flora, since plants would still retain the “autonomy” to reproduce on their own.
- On a watch that costs $300,000 …’Anyone can buy a watch that tells time,’ he told a Reuters reporter, ‘but only a “truly discerning customer” can buy one that doesn’t.’
- On a car thief that ran down battery which triggers …a theft-prevention device that locked the doors, trapping him inside, where he was waiting when police arrived.
2. Automated story ideas generator (opens in new window)
This site has an IDEA button that, when clicked, generates three story elements:
- A location
- A theme
- An object involved in the story
You can click as many times as you like, generating a new trio of story elements with every click. If one set doesn’t do the job, the next one should.

These resources are a hoot and an excellent pattern interrupting device to shift your thoughts to another place entirely.
I find that’s one of the best things to get the creative juices flowing.
