Story Ideas and Overcoming Writer’s Block
By Deb Gallardo
From Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing comes a terrific article on finding story ideas for both fiction and non-fiction that will also overcome writer’s block. It’s kind of a 1-2 punch (or 1-2-3 punch, if there is such a thing).
One suggestion she makes is to checkout the Twitter public feed if you’re searching for story ideas. I’ll be blogging about this in a later post myself, as I have a unique spin to put on this Twitter technique. Two other suggestions are reading widely and reading a lot, as well as co-opting a minor character from popular fiction and feature her/him in a new work. Examples include The Wicked Witch of the West from “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” who stars in Wicked, and Grendel, the monster from “Beowulf,” who stars in a work bearing his name.
