Story Idea Generators for Fun or Inspiration

Story idea generators continue to be one of the most popular type article that people come here to find. Such online tools are somewhat unreliable for creating interesting story ideas on their own. HOWEVER — they can spark your imagination. And really, wouldn’t you rather say that the idea was yours instead of some limited javascript program? Come on!
The first generator is called “Random Loglines.” As with many of this type of story idea generator, you can click over and over on the generator button until a response jumps out at you. My advice is to take notes. Write down any of the “who,” the “what,” the “where,” and whatever other elements are generated, that capture your interest. You won’t hurt anyone’s feelings if you don’t like the combination.
The more absurd the combinations, the more your creativity may become engaged. It depends on how your mind works. Go to Random Loglines here.
Over at Seventh Sanctum, you will find a veritable smorgasbord of story idea generators. These are listed in the left sidebar. In the right sidebar you’ll find links to other people’s story idea generators.
Here are two generators I found interesting. The first one is called the Envisioner. Here are two samples:
“The tale of Rip Van Winkle envisioned as a conspiracy tale.”
“A fusion of the story of Hansel and Gretel and the story of Moby Dick, set on a luxury yacht.”
Another one that interested me says it’s for action movies, but what I like is that the output is created in the style of a film trailer:
“In a terrifying empire, in a time of lost souls and mysteries, a hermit and a mercenary try to find freedom and battle terrorism.”
This site is heavy on fantasy, but that’s a strength in my opinion. Without pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, we’ll never get beyond a puny existence in fiction.
