Story Ideas – You Need Something to Say
By Deb Gallardo
I’ve become a raving fan of the late, great Jim Rohn, a motivational speaker extraordinaire. Here’s an important Jim Rohn quote that every writer needs to be reminded of and even commit to memory:
You cannot speak that which you do not know. You cannot share that which you do not feel. You cannot translate that which you do not have. And you cannot give that which you do not possess. To give it and to share it, and for it to be effective, you first need to have it. Good communication starts with good preparation. This principle holds true for fiction and non-fiction writers. Whether we are communicating a world of our own invention, peopled with characters from our imaginations, or facts, figures and concepts, we can’t just sit down to write. We have nothing to give, nothing to say.
But so many would-be writers try to do just that. And inevitably they come up dry and wrongly assume their lack of success is due to not being cut out to be a writer. This may not be true at all.
If the talent and skill are within you, then you CAN become a writer. You simply need a starting point – a spark of an idea that can catch fire and inspire a full-blown piece of writing.
This is your preparation work as a writer. Without something to say, you will simply stare at a blank sheet of paper or an empty word processing page.
