Story Ideas – Grow Yours With an Ideas Notebook
By Deb Gallardo
Creativity Expert Dan Goodwin says this about story ideas:
Creative ideas are the raw material from which all creative projects are built. Without any ideas, you have nowhere to begin to write from, no starting point, no direction to focus your creative writing talents.
He offer 3 steps to unlocking your creativity through the use of an Ideas Journal.
- First we need to understand why we think we don’t have enough good ideas. Generally it’s because it “feels” as though we never have any good ideas. That’s not the case. Ideas are, in fact, all around us, but if we fail to capture them, we lose them forever.
- Second, we need to purchase a small, inexpensive notebook to carry around. It’s important to capture ideas as they occur, setting down what Dan calls “the juicy core of the idea” in as much vivid detail as possible. He offers one caution: Capture now, decide how to use it later. This isn’t the time to make judgments on what is “good enough” to include.
- Finally, we need to use the Ideas Journal correctly. Dan says to scan through our captured ideas until one catches our imagination, close the journal and start writing.
Dan assures us that the more ideas we capture and use, the more ideas will come to each of us, and the better they’ll become!
