Story Ideas: Sue Grafton on “T is For Trespass”

Even if you are not a mystery buff, you would need to be living under a rock not to recognize the name Sue Grafton, whose signature series began with “A is For Alibi,” starring independent and gutsy PI, Kinsey Millhone. In today’s Ventura County Star, reporter Karen Lindell has written a feature article on Grafton and her book signing this Sunday, January 6, 2008, at Mysteries to Die For bookshop in Thousand Oaks.Here is the cogent part of the article, pertaining to story ideas.

…The subject of [Grafton's] most recent book is elder abuse. In “T Is for Trespass,” Millhone tries to keep an evil caregiver from harming a cranky old neighbor.

The inspiration for the story, Grafton said, was a series in the Los Angeles Times about elder abuse that she had saved in her files… Read ” ‘Q’ is For Queue”

Note: Grafton keeps newspaper clippings in a file for possible story ideas. I still say a newspaper is the most consistent source of inspiration for writers. I’m not saying “I told you so,” however. Well, not exactly…
