Sci-fi novels, movies and TV series have long used the term “dark matter,” without a lot of explanation. I assumed it was a theoretical possibility, but one that didn’t come close to being proven. Turns out I was right. Dark matter and dark energy are much-speculated about, but so far their existence is only inferred, since scientific theorists have nothing tangible to go on. Now space scientists hope to find out where an inexplainable surplus of high-energy electrons that are bombarding Earth are coming from, how close they are to our solar system, and if they’re made of dark matter.
