Story Ideas from a Super Science Project Gone Awry

By Deb Gallardo

The World’s Biggest Science Experiment?

Unless you read about cutting edge science or rub elbows with those who are in the know on all matters of high-power science and technology, it may have passed your notice that September 2008, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s most powerful particle accelerator, located in an elaborate underground facility nearGeneva, Switzerland, was damaged while in the testing phase and is not scheduled to be initialized until an unspecified time in 2009.

But what exactly is this collider meant to do and why was it created? Below is a YouTube video that answers those questions. Be prepared to be amazed at the scope of this project and what scientists hope to discover about the creation of the universe, time travel and much, much more.

Story Idea Takeaway:

Speculate about what caused the accident that set back the collider’s time table to find out the origins of the universe, time travel and the other questions scientists are hoping to discover. Was it sabotage or a fluke? Divine intervention (if you’re writing an apocalyptic story or one with religious implications at its heart)?

What if scientists find the answers they’re seeking? How soon will they know? Will the data take years to decipher or merely days or months? What will the implications be?

If time travel is proved possible, will it be implementable in our lifetime?

If we can shoot a hole in the universe, will that permit us to travel vast distances in the blink of an eye, or will space travel still be limited to time measured in light years?

Will the experiment underground affect Earth’s tectonic plates? Our atmosphere?

Enjoy your speculation and happy writing!
