Story Ideas from Gamma Ray Mysteries
By Deb Gallardo
In my continuing series on space science-related story ideas, I came across another Gamma Ray anomaly.
A single gamma-ray burst (GRB) can easily outshine an entire galaxy containing hundreds of billions of stars. Powerful telescopes can see them from clear across the Universe. And because the deeper you look into space, the farther back in time you see, astronomers should be able to see GRBs from the time when the very first stars were forming after the Big Bang. Yet they don’t. Gamma-ray bursts from that early epoch seem to be missing, and astronomers are wondering where they are.
From my perspective, assuming that the universe was formed by a Big Bang takes a leap of faith, since the so-called Big Bang is still a THEORY. That scientists pride themselves on their scientific method and claim not to presuppose anything and yet still put forward a theory as fact because they haven’t found any other answer is mind-boggling to me. But I digress…

STORY IDEAS TAKEAWAY:
What does it mean when gamma rays that ought to be there aren’t? Is it something to worry about? Does this foreshadow coming cosmic changes? If so, what might those changes be? Or could it be that there WAS no Big Bang, since what scientists expect to see isn’t present? What implications would that have on space science? On the scientists themselves? On other, related theories?
