Creativity – Be all That You Can Be
By Deb Gallardo
My friend and creativity expert, Dan Goodwin, has written an article on the topic of how you can become the most creative person you know. A high degree of creativity is essential for writers and others in the creative arts, but sometimes we feel uncreative, just when we need it most. Dan offers 5 tips for amping up your creativity so you can surpass even the most creative person you know.
- Do you think of creativity as something separate from yourself, something you can can disconnect from while you go on with the rest of your life? If so, you’re missing the point. Creativity is a state of mind — a state of being.
- Do you capture the ideas you generate or are you convinced you’ll remember them when they’re needed? Bad move. You need a method or system for keeping track of those ideas. Develop the habit of writing them down or adding them to a spreadsheet or word processing document.
- Do you create regularly or haphazardly? The truth is, the more frequently you create, the more creative you become. It’s your guarantee of success. Creative activity begets more creative activity.
- Do you believe in your own creativity? If you don’t, it’s time you took a long look at all the ways you think and act creatively every day in the details. From coordinating your wardrobe to planning meals to working through problems, chances are you’re thinking creatively. Sorry to do this to you, but I can’t help it. I have to say it: “I told you so.” You are creative. It’s time you started to believe it.
- Do you get regular visitations from your inner critic? How do you handle those hypercritical moments? Do you believe whatever s/he whispers in your ear? And do you hate that nagging voice? That may be part of the problem. The truth is, your inner critic is just trying to protect you from failure. The secret is to say, “Thank you, but I’m going to create anyway,” and then get busy and create.
So if you’re feeling uncreative, try one of these tips and get back in the flow. Try more than one. Try them all. Turn yourself into a creativity “machine” and never doubt that you’re creative again.
